The Year was 1983, or maybe '84, I forget,
computers were measured in Kb, not Gb, games
were just breaking out of the pong/invaders mode
and along came Miner Willy.
Miner Willy started life on the Sinclair ZX
Spectrum, in the game Manic Miner, a 20 screen
gather the treasure type platform game, it had
outstanding graphics, sound and gameplay for the
day. A year later, fat on the riches he had mined
, Willy resurfaced in his cliff top mansion, after
a wild nights partying, the guest have all gone
home, and all Willy wants to do is sleep, but
Maria the housekeep is having none of it, and
won't let him rest until the mansion is cleaned
up totaly.
This follow up game was called "Jet Set Willy",
it featured more platform madness, more screens
than you can shake a stick at and maddening
gameplay that you just couldn't put down.
The original game was released by Software
Projects, and written by Matthew Smith, who
dropped off the map sometime after this and hasn't
been seen since, where are you Matthew?
At the time it featured many side swiping jokes
at other figures in the software industry, a
whole raft of quirky jokes and out and out
hippy humour, along with plenty of bugs >:-|
Willy re-surfaced again in JSWII, featuring an
even bigger play area, written by someone else,
but somehow it wasn't the same. Willy lives on
to this day in various PC remakes and web sites,
just type in Jet Set Willy into any search page
and you'll see what I mean.
I've been going retro lately, playing some of the
old classics either in remake form or via one of
the various emulators, and I thought this would
be a tiny tribute to all those happy mad times
I had playing this game, or maybe I'm just
putting my stink on this great old game.
I have no idea who owns the copyright on this,
Software Projects seem to have died off years ago
, Matthew Smith hasn't been seen for years, and
Willy is all over the net, but if you do know who
owns this little fella, I'd love to know, you
might wanna sue my ass for copyright theft as
well :)
Many thanks to ripe for the authentic looking
text.bmp ;), cheers.
Greetings flow out to ....
Cappy,Duk,'Adder,DD,Bladez,Wally,Mike,Xerxes
and all the rest of the Jonestown gang.
